Dr. Thamer Tanoon

Dr. Thamer Tanoon is a UK-trained Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist with over 12 years of clinical and leadership experience within the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). Before joining the team, he served as a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist in the Neurodevelopmental Disorders Services in Newcastle, UK, leading the assessment and management of children and adolescents with complex neurodevelopmental and mental health conditions. 

Dr. Tanoon is a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) and holds a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT-UK) in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry from the UK, and is fully registered with the UK General Medical Council (GMC-UK). 

His NHS UK experience spans the full range of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), including community, inpatient, forensic, psychiatric intensive care, low secure, and highly specialised tertiary services. He also worked at the nationally recognised Complex Neurodevelopmental Disorders Service (CNDS), a Tier 4 tertiary service specialising in the assessment and management of complex neurodevelopmental disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and co-occurring mental health conditions. 

Dr. Thamer has expertise in the assessment and evidence-based treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders as well as mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), trauma-related disorders, behavioural difficulties, and emotional dysregulation. As a Consultant, he led specialist formulation clinics for young people with complex presentations, provided clinical leadership, supervised resident doctors and multidisciplinary teams, and contributed to service development and quality improvement initiatives. 

Before sub-specialising in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Dr. Thamer gained broad experience across adult, forensic, learning disability, and old age psychiatry, providing him with a comprehensive understanding of mental health across the lifespan. 

Alongside his clinical practice, Dr. Thamer has a strong interest in medical education and professional development. He has served as an examiner for Newcastle University Faculty of Medical Sciences, supported psychiatrists preparing for the Royal College CASC examination, and worked as an Associate Researcher with Newcastle University. 

Dr. Thamer is committed to delivering compassionate, patient- and family-centred care through collaborative, multidisciplinary practice. He strongly values the contributions of all members of the multidisciplinary team and believes that the best outcomes are achieved through integrated, evidence-based approaches that address the biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors influencing a young person’s mental health.  

He has a deep understanding of the region’s cultural diversity, and social determinants of mental health. Fluent in both English and Arabic, he provides culturally sensitive care tailored to the individual needs of children, adolescents, and families from diverse backgrounds.
