Dr. Matthew Kelleher
Consultant Psychiatrist
Abu Dhabi
Dr. Kelleher is a British consultant psychiatrist with broad experience across National Health Service (NHS), military and private practice, and specialist expertise in addictions, ADHD and trauma-related conditions but also treats all elements of general adult psychiatry.
Dr. Kelleher’s approach is one of openness, compassion, and cultural sensitivity. He encourages both medication and non-medication approaches wherever possible. He strongly emphasizes patient choice and works collaboratively with patients to agree on a plan that meets their needs, whilst also being evidence-based and realistic.
He completed his medical degree at the University of Manchester and went on to train in psychiatry at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, gaining experience across general adult psychiatry, addictions, perinatal (related to pregnancy) liaison (psychiatry in the general hospital), forensic and child and adolescent services. This broad exposure to all elements of mental health was a deliberate choice to ensure that patients can access the clinical experience of multiple specialist areas.
Dr. Kelleher also completed postgraduate training in CBT at OCTC, The University of Oxford.
He holds Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and has been heavily involved with the activities of the college including sitting on the executive committee for addictions and helping shape the curriculum for trainees. Dr Kelleher was also awarded a scholarship to the UK Parliament and contributed to national guidance and advisory for matters of mental health and most notably the revision of the mental capacity act to ensure patients are safeguarded when they are most vulnerable.
His clinical leadership as a senior doctor stems from a successful career in the British Army. Following his initial medical training he worked as a foundation doctor at a UK NHS-Military hospital, then completed Officer training at the world-renowned Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He spent several years of regimental duties, and his final years were as the Army’s chief psychiatrist in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel whilst also leading a London-based military community mental team.
Dr Kelleher also worked extensively in Harley Street private practice, working with adults with ADHD and cooccurring conditions, and was frequently asked to take on complex cases where substance misuse, work-related problems or relationship difficulties were present.
